What Is Vaser Liposuction?

By Dr. Charles J. Galanis

What is Vaser Liposuction

Even the most health-conscious person who leads a healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet and regular exercise program may have excess fat pockets or bulges that they just can’t seem to get rid of.

These areas of body fat can be a source of concern, and you may be wondering how to eliminate them. While there are a number of options available outside of traditional liposuction, Vaser liposuction should be on your radar if you’re seeking to get rid of unwanted fat.

What Does Vaser Liposuction Involve?

Vaser liposuction, also refered to as ultrasound assisted liposuction,  is a hi-def liposuction cosmetic procedure that is used to remove fat pockets that have formed under the skin.

The name “Vaser” is an acronym that stands for “vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance.” This type of high definition ultrasound technology uses strong ultrasound energy waves to liquefy fat cells that are packed in groups.

While Vaser uses high definition ultrasound technology, it is a minimally invasive procedure. This minimally invasive body contouring is considered to be more precise and controlled compared to traditional liposuction. As with all types of liposuction, it is not considered to be a weight loss tool.

People who are close to their goal weights but have a few pockets of fat they’d like to eliminate usually experience the best effects from Vaser lipo.  How much fat that needs to be removed will be closely measure by your plastic surgeon.

During a Vaser liposuction treatment, small sutures are made around the areas that are being targeted for fat removal. Using pulsing ultrasounds from the Vaser tool, heat is generated to break apart targeted fat cells for easy removal and tighten the skin.

The connections between fatty tissues are broken, allowing for easy removal through cannulas that suction the fat from underneath the skin.

Since it is so precise, Vaser hi-def liposuction is an excellent option for body contouring and sculpting.

What Areas of the Body Can Vaser Treat?

Similar to other types of traditional liposuction techniques, Vaser can treat multiple areas of the body with ultrasound waves, including the following:

  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Chin and neck
  • Upper back
  • Waistline and stomach
  • Hips and thighs
  • Buttocks

Vaser can be helpful for those who are seeking to get rid of excess fat in any of these targeted areas.

What Are the Benefits of Vaser?

Plastic surgeons have noted a number of benefits to high definition Vaser liposuction. A few include:

Target Fat Cells

Vaser is designed to target fat tissue, not other types of healthy tissue. Thus, the high definition procedure does not damage non-fat surrounding tissues. It also allows for the specific removal of certain fatty areas, including small pockets.

Can Be Performed Under Local Sedation

For some patients who don’t like the idea of going under general anesthesia, Vaser lipo can be performed using local anesthesia and sedation. This leads to a quicker recovery period immediately following Vaser. It also may better fit some patients’ needs.

Results Are Immediately Noticeable

While it will take time for the full results of the procedure to become apparent, you may see significant initial results right after the procedure. Allow a few months to see the most drastic changes to your body.

Before undergoing a Vaser hi-def liposuction procedure at Galanis Plastic Surgery, you’ll meet with Dr. Charles Galanis for a consultation.

During the appointment, Dr. Galanis will ask for your full medical history and what you’re seeking to obtain through undergoing liposuction. He will also perform an examination and take pictures of the area that you’d like to have treated. This allows him to plan out your upcoming liposuction according to your body type.

Before the consultation, make sure to prepare a list of questions that you have regarding the procedure. Dr. Galanis is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is highly skilled in performing Vaser liposuction. He can answer any inquiries that you may have.

On the day of your Vaser liposuction procedure, you’ll be placed under a type of anesthesia. This may be either general anesthesia or conscious sedation, depending on your preferences and needs.

Once you are fully sedated, a fluid solution mixed with an anesthetic will be injected into the area to be treated. Next, the ultrasound probes used in Vaser lipo are gently inserted to target the areas of fat. As they release their ultrasonic waves, fatty tissue will be broken up.

As it breaks apart, the cannula will vacuum out the fatty tissue and remove most of the fluid that was previously injected.

The entire procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and will take several hours. You can expect to spend some time in our recovery area afterward, where we’ll monitor you before releasing you to recover at home.

Your recovery time, as well as instructions for aftercare, will be discussed with Dr. Galanis during the consultation and prior to your procedure. In many cases, patients ask relatives who may assist with their care to join them before undergoing Vaser so that they understand how to assist them in the days following a Vaser treatment.

How Long Do Results Last?

Just like traditional liposuction, the results from a Vaser treatment are often permanent. As long as you follow a healthy diet and continue with your exercise program, you’ll be able to maintain your silhouette.

However, keep in mind that your body will change over time. Significant weight gain or simply getting older may cause you to experience changes to the areas that were treated.
