What is Breast Augmentation?
Interested in Breast Augmentation in Beverly Hills?
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance breast size by inserting breast implants beneath the breast tissue or chest muscles.
While some women choose this procedure to boost their self-confidence, others opt for it as a component of breast reconstruction for various medical conditions.

Breast Implant Size
Breast Implants come in a range of sizes measured volumetrically in cubic centimeters (cc’s). Rather than focusing on a cup size, which varies between bra brands and styles, patients are advised to focus on the look they are trying to achieve.
Using your dimensions, goal photos, and a sizing system, Dr. Galanis will help you pick your implant volume.
Breast Implant Placement Options
With subglandular implant placement, implants are placed above the pectoral muscle and under the glandular tissue. This technique is ideal for patients with sufficient existing breast tissue. The recovery for patients who opt for subglandular implant placement is also shorter and less painful.
Submuscular implant placement involves placing implants underneath the pectoral muscle. This option is ideal for patients with thin breast skin or a small amount of natural breast tissue. The muscle helps conceal the edges of the implant in the upper pole of the breast for a more natural breast slope.
Types of Breast Implant Incisions
There are pros and cons to each incision, which Dr. Galanis will discuss with you. The three incision options are:
An incision is created along the inframammary fold, the crease underneath the breast. An inframammary incision allows for precise implant pocket creation.
An incision is made within the underarm or armpit area, and tunnels are created that lead to the breast.
These incisions encircle half of the areola and can accommodate both saline and most silicone implants.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
After undergoing outpatient breast augmentation surgery, the recovery process unfolds gradually, with results becoming more apparent over 3 to 6 months, contingent on the extent of liposuction; some benefits emerge immediately.
Pain levels differ based on the targeted areas and liposuction degree, often requiring oral pain medication for 3 to 5 days. Notably, no drains are used in this procedure, and all sutures are dissolvable.
Daily activities remain unrestricted, with walking encouraged, and showering is permissible the day after surgery.
However, lifting more than 10 pounds should be avoided for two weeks, and driving while on narcotic pain medication is allowed. Moderate exercise becomes an option at the two-week mark, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be postponed for four weeks.
The duration of time off work may range from 2 to 7 days, contingent on the procedure’s extent. Regular follow-up appointments at 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months are scheduled as needed for comprehensive post-operative care.

Questions and Answers
How long will my implants last?
There is a common misconception that breast implants need to be exchanged after 10 years. If you do not have a problem with your implants and are not experiencing any pain or change in appearance, then nothing needs to be done. That being said, no artificial device should be expected to last forever.
Common reasons for a revision surgery include implant rupture, capsular contracture, desire to change sizes, or desire to exchange silicone for saline implants.
What are “gummy bear” implants?
“Gummy bear” implants are the latest in breast implant technology. These implants contain a cross-linked cohesive silicone gel designed to hold together and maintain their structure even in the event of a rupture. These implants can be either round or shaped. The shell may be textured to encourage tissue ingrowth, reduce the risk of capsular contracture, and reduce the risk of implant rotation.
For patients with minimal breast tissue, shaped gummy bear implants give a more natural teardrop-shaped appearance in which the less prominent upper portion of the breast slopes down to a fuller lower portion of the breast, mimicking the natural breast shape.
Will breast augmentation lift my sagging breast?
Breast augmentation is not designed to lift the breasts, but it can help if there is minimal sagging. To correct significant sagging, you may want to consider combining your breast augmentation with a breast lift.
What kind of bra will I be able to wear following surgery?
A compression bra will be provided and should be worn for two weeks. A sports bra may be worn two weeks later, but an underwire bra may not be worn until at least four weeks after surgery (in cases of an incision under the breast). No drains will be used, and any sutures used are dissolvable.
Are breast augmentation scars visible?
The extent of scarring from breast augmentation primarily hinges on the specific type of surgery and the incision placement chosen by your surgeon (details to follow). These scars will become apparent right after the surgery and may appear more prominent as your healing process progresses.
When can i sleep on my side after breast augmentation?
In most cases, breast implant patients can safely return to sleeping on their side or front when they feel at ease, which usually occurs around 6 to 12 weeks post-surgery.
By this point, breast augmentation incisions will have completely healed, and the majority of swelling, bruising, and discomfort will have subsided.
Can you get a breast augmentation with lift?
When an breast implant surgery and breast lift are performed together in a single procedure, it’s known as an augmentation-mastopexy. This approach not only elevates the nipple to a higher position but also enhances fullness in the upper breast area.
