Is Microneedling Right for You?

By Dr. Charles J. Galanis

Are you interested in skin rejuvenation therapy, but want to avoid lengthy downtimes or invasive treatments? If so, then you may be a great candidate for microneedling. This unique treatment is designed to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes and enhance collagen production within your skin.

Microneedling is a popular and efficient way to move closer to your cosmetic goals in a minimally invasive way. Galanis Plastic Surgery proudly offers microneedling at our conveniently located Los Angeles, CA, office.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling utilizes tiny needles to create invisible holes in the top few layers of your dermis. In order to produce these holes, our providers use a handheld device that contains a small set of microneedles. The penetration depth of these needles can be adjusted, which allows our clinicians to administer various types of microneedling treatments.

By creating these punctures, microneedling leverages your body’s natural healing capabilities. Microneedling has the potential to stimulate collagen production, reduce the appearance of acne scars, and tighten pores.

Microneedling can also be paired with other types of treatment, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to maximize your results.

Is Microneedling the Same as a Vampire Facial?

A vampire facial is a specific type of microneedling skin rejuvenation. During a standard microneedling session, we will carefully apply the handheld device to your target treatment areas. Prior to starting the treatment, our provider will place a topical analgesic cream on your face in order to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

While vampire facials also involve microneedling, they include a second type of intervention as well, which is known as PRP therapy. PRP is done by drawing your own blood and then using a centrifuge to separate the various components, which include platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells, and plasma.

Once the platelets and plasma are harvested, they will be injected into your target treatment areas. This is performed after microneedling.

By combining both of these interventions, your provider can stimulate more significant skin healing. Vampire facials are a good treatment option for patients who are faced with severe skin damage.

How Microneedling Works

A microneedling skin rejuvenation treatment is designed to help you obtain a healthier, younger-looking appearance by stimulating your body’s natural healing capabilities. Below, we’ll divide the treatment experience into steps in order to help you better understand what to expect.

Consultation

The first step toward receiving treatment is to schedule a consultation with one of our clinicians. During the consultation, we will review your health history and discuss your specific cosmetic goals. After the consultation, we will assist you in choosing an appointment time that fits your schedule.

Preparation

In order to prepare for your appointment, it is vital that you thoroughly cleanse your skin. You should begin this process approximately 5-7 days before your appointment. Our provider may recommend a specific cleaning and moisturizing solution, if needed.

On the morning of your microneedling session, cleanse your skin and ensure that you are not wearing any makeup of any kind.

The Procedure

When you arrive, our doctor will review the procedure with you briefly and ask if you have any final questions. If desired, we can apply a topical anesthetic to your face before beginning the microneedling procedure.

If you opt to have us apply the anesthetic, we will give it a few minutes to take full effect. We will then begin the microneedling process using the handheld tool. We will thoroughly apply the tool to each of your targeted treatment areas.

After completing the procedure, we will apply a soothing serum that is designed to expedite the healing process and reduce any redness. In total, microneedling skin rejuvenation takes approximately one hour to complete. The actual length of your procedure will depend on your unique needs and the number of areas that are being treated.

Recovery

There is no downtime required for microneedling. As soon as you complete your treatment, you can resume your normal activities.

Over the next two to three days, your skin should fully heal from the microneedling procedure. When this occurs, you can restart any skincare routines and begin wearing makeup products again.

What Results Should I Expect?

While each patient’s experience is unique, most individuals notice visible improvements to their skin within the first few days. However, addressing more substantial cosmetic concerns like acne scarring or wrinkles will require additional treatment sessions. Your provider will likely recommend a total of three to four sessions that are spaced about 30 days apart.

Within a few days after treatment, many patients report benefits such as softer skin, a fuller look, and less pronounced wrinkles or scarring.

Who Is a Candidate for Microneedling?

Both male and female patients can benefit from microneedling or vampire facials. These skin rejuvenation therapies can stimulate collagen production, reduce the appearance of cosmetic issues, and activate the body’s natural healing response.

The best way to find out whether you are a candidate for microneedling is to schedule a consultation with our skilled professionals.
