WHAT CAN BE IMPROVED WITH RHINOPLASTY?

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures. According to a 2017 report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were almost 225,000 rhinoplasties performed in 2016. But who is the best candidate for rhinoplasty? The procedure is appropriate for those looking to fix the appearance of their nose, which includes refining nostrils and the hump of the nose, reducing the size, and even correcting a broken nose. Septoplasty can also be performed to improve medical conditions related to breathing. Though the basic steps of rhinoplasty are the same, there are different ways that rhinoplasty procedures can be performed.

TYPES OF PROCEDURES

CLOSED RHINOPLASTY

For patients who are looking for a modest change in the appearance of their nose, closed rhinoplasty is performed. During closed rhinoplasty, Charles Galanis, M.D. makes incisions inside your nostril, which avoids any visible scars.

OPEN RHINOPLASTY

An open rhinoplasty is appropriate if you’re looking for a more extensive reshaping of your nose. The incision is made in the skin between your nostrils at the base of the nose, which leaves minimal scarring. Charles Galanis, M.D. has more access to the structures of your nose, giving him the ability to more dramatically reshape your nose.

SEPTOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty can also be performed with a septoplasty if you need a surgical solution to correct breathing problems. Conditions such as a deviated septum, which affects a patient’s breathing, require the internal restructuring of the nasal septum (the bone and cartilage that divide the nostrils). Typically, it will need to be straightened or repositioned to allow for better flow of oxygen.

DURING THE PROCEDURE

You will consult with Charles Galanis, M.D. to decide which approach is best for you. For patients looking to reduce the size of any part of the nose, cartilage may be removed. Should there be a need to add to the nasal structure, a cartilage graft may be added. Once the nasal structure has been reshaped, you will be left with your desired appearance.

RESULTS

You may not see results immediately after your procedure, and swelling and bruising are both completely normal immediately following your surgery. Your new nasal shape may be obscured until swelling subsides after the first one to two weeks. You will continue to see subtle changes in your nose shape, as it takes up to one year for your nose to heal and you can see your final results.
