6 Skincare Routine Essentials That Defy Premature Aging

By Dr. Charles J. Galanis

The signs of aging can begin to show up in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots as early as the mid-20s. At this age, then, I recommend to my patients that they invest in an anti-aging skincare routine that stimulates collagen growth and cell turnover to defy the aging process. Now If you have passed this age and have not yet begun these daily skincare habits, don’t throw in the towel! It isn’t too late to start. Here are the six skincare routine essentials that defy premature aging.

1. USE SUNSCREEN

The sun causes the majority of skin complaints, including age spots, freckles, blotchiness, wrinkles, and poor skin texture. Studies have proven that consistent use of SPF 30 sunscreen will protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays that damage it and accelerate aging. Since those with fair skin are more prone to showing signs of aging caused by the sun (and also have a higher risk of developing skin cancer from sun exposure), adding this step to your anti-aging skin regimen is a necessity. Also, this is NOT just for sunny days. Science has shown that sun damage can occur even on cloudy days, so make it a daily practice!

2. USE A GENTLE FACE WASH AND TONER TO CLEAN THE SKIN

Especially if you wear makeup or are prone to oily skin, washing your face before bed is essential. Excess makeup, pollutants, and oil can become trapped in your pores. Not only can this lead to acne and increased bacteria on your face, but it can increase dryness, which makes fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable. Adding a toner to your skincare regimen will also help to clear the pores of unavoidable debris, restore pH balance, and add a layer of protection to the skin.

3. EXFOLIATE TWICE A WEEK

A good quality exfoliant will remove dead skin cells from your face and soften your skin. It helps to clear the skin of bacteria, sloughs away damaged cells to encourage new skin growth, and stimulates circulation in the face to get a beautifully glowing look. Aim to exfoliate twice per week if you have normal skin and once per week if your skin is very sensitive or delicate.

4. APPLY A TOPICAL RETINOID

Once your face is clean and dry, a topical retinoid will work to brighten and heal the skin to promote anti-aging effects. Since retinoids often dry out the skin, it should be followed by a heavy moisturizer at the end of the day.

5. APPLY A GOOD QUALITY MOISTURIZER

Since our skin loses the most moisture when we sleep, another essential skincare habit is to apply a good quality moisturizer to the face and neck before bed. Look for ingredients that include antioxidants, peptides, and vitamins C and A to fully hydrate your skin.

6. GET YOUR “BEAUTY SLEEP”

Before you can even think about topical products that reduce aging, you can improve your appearance and stave off the aging process by getting at least six to eight hours of sleep each night. With adequate sleep, the body has the time needed for the essential cell repair and collagen production processes that lead to plumper, wrinkle-free skin.
