A Guide to the First Week of Chin Lipo Recovery

The chin lipo recovery process is usually well-endured by patients. While there will be a few slightly uncomfortable symptoms, for the most part, it is a quick and pain-free recovery, almost always uninhibited by complications. Naturally, as with any recovery period following surgery, you will have guidelines and instructions to follow.

But as long as you abide by these directives, you should have a smooth recovery period, great results you are happy with, and little to no chin lipo scar visibility once you’ve healed.

How Long Is Chin Lipo Recovery?

Most patients will need to stay home after chin liposuction surgery for approximately one week — sometimes shorter and sometimes longer. Depending on how comfortable you are going out in public with some possible residual swelling, bruising, and your compression garment, you may be able to return to work or school sooner than one week. Every patient’s situation is different.

Throughout your chin lipo recovery day by day you should see improvements. With each passing week, your swelling and bruising (discoloration) will diminish, and you should also be able to wear your compression garment less and less.

First Week of Chin Lipo Recovery: What to Expect

Typically, the first week of recovery time for chin lipo surgery is when most of your symptoms are occurring. Double chin liposuction patients can generally expect the following:

  • Bruising and discoloration (sometimes down to the neck area and chest)
  • Swelling
  • Slight discomfort

With your chin swollen, it may be difficult to chew tough and crunchy foods. For this reason, some submental liposuction surgeons may recommend that during the initial chin liposuction recovery time, patients focus more on soft foods and a liquid diet.

This usually only needs to be followed for a few days after surgery. Then, patients can go back to their normal diet. However, we do recommend refraining from alcohol and limiting sodium, too much of which can exacerbate swelling.

Overall, make sure you are following these directions during your recovery:

  • Wear compression garments as directed (usually, a chin lipo compression garment will be put on you/given to you when you are discharged after surgery).
  • Do not smoke.
  • Avoid alcohol for the initial recovery period.
  • Do not lift anything heavy or exercise (short walks and regular normal movement are okay).
  • Do not submerge your treatment area in water (no going underwater in a tub or pool, etc.).
  • Sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated.
  • Consider placing pillows or wedges around you while you sleep; these can help reduce your risk of rolling to the side or onto your stomach while you sleep.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Attend all of the follow up appointments with your plastic surgeon. They will want to check on your progress and answer any questions you may have.

FAQ: Double Chin Lipo Surgery

What if I end up with a botched chin liposuction procedure?

With chin liposuction bad results are rare. Usually, such a poor outcome is either the result of the surgeon not being adequately prepared (not board certified, not experienced, etc.) or the patient not following their chin lipo aftercare instructions properly.

If you do end up with a bad outcome after your chin liposuction recovery, talk to your surgeon as soon as possible about your options. Sometimes, poor results can be fixed for a discounted fee or for free. If you don’t feel comfortable with your current surgeon, seek another board-certified plastic surgeon with particular experience performing chin liposuction revisions.

Is chin liposuction recovery painful?

During your double chin lipo recovery, you may have some discomfort, but this should be short-lived for most patients. Nearly every plastic surgery procedure that involves liposuction will result in some light soreness simply because the liposuction procedure requires agitation and “trauma” to the surrounding blood vessels and tissues when the excess fat is being removed.

Is your chin swollen after lipo?

Yes, patients will likely have swelling on their chin, jawline, and neck after surgery. Sometimes, this swelling extends around to the cheeks and the rest of the face too. Rest assured, swelling decreases in a short time following surgery.

When will I see my chin lipo results?

You should be able to see much of your chin liposuction results right away after surgery. The excess fat will be gone, and even though you’ll have a bit of swelling, you should see a new jawline contour and neckline without the excess bulk. Still, remember that it won’t be until you complete the healing process that your complete chin lipo results will be visible.
