Breast Implant Revision Beverly Hills

Breast revision is a category-defining any breast surgery performed some time after an initial operation on the breast. The reasons for revision surgery are numerous (see below under “who is a candidate”). These surgeries are often very complex. Dr. Galanis’ extensive background in breast reconstruction uniquely qualifies him to take on some of the more challenging breast revision cases.

What is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision surgery aims to replace old breast implants with new ones and may involve enhancing breast appearance by updating implant material. This could include a simultaneous breast lift or breast reduction for improved results.

Breast Revision Recovery

Breast Implant revision is an outpatient surgery that ensures immediate results, with ongoing size reduction over 4 to 8 weeks. Pain management varies, requiring oral medication for 7 to 10 days.

A compression bra is provided for 2 weeks, followed by a sports bra at 2 weeks and avoiding wire bras until 4 weeks postoperative. Drains are seldom used, and if so, removed within a week. Dissolvable sutures eliminate the need for removal.

No activity restrictions are imposed; walking is encouraged. Patients may shower after 2 days but should refrain from lifting over 10 pounds for 2 weeks, driving while on narcotic pain medication, and strenuous activity for 6 weeks.

Expect a 1 to 2-week work hiatus based on job demands. Postoperative follow-up appointments occur at 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and as needed.

If insurance doesn’t apply, inquire about patient financing plans many surgeons offer for breast implant revision surgery.

Questions and Answers

How common is breast implant revision?

Post-primary augmentation revision rates persist at 36%. Common causes include capsular contracture, implant malposition, and aging breast ptosis.

What is the recovery time for breast implant revision surgery?

Breast implant revision surgery results may be temporarily concealed by swelling. It typically requires at least six weeks for the swelling to diminish, allowing the breasts to feel softer and more natural. In certain instances, it might take 6-12 months for the breasts to regain a “normal” feel.

Is breast implant revision painful?

Typically, the recovery period after breast implant revision surgery is briefer and less discomforting compared to the initial procedure. Recovery time may vary based on the specific adjustments required, but in general, healing is quicker and less painful.

Will insurance cover breast implant revision?

While health insurance may cover capsulectomy or the removal of scar tissue around the implant, and the removal of the implant, the replacement of the breast implant is generally not covered. Implant replacement for capsular contracture is deemed an elective procedure.

Why is breast revision more expensive?

The presence of scar tissue complicates outcome predictability in breast revision. Dealing with tissue stretching and anatomical changes from previous implants, surgeons often charge higher fees for breast revision compared to primary breast augmentation.
